How the city’s water supply has been kept clean

A city can only thrive with clean water

Water, water everywhere, and almost all of it is clean enough to drink! Our inland waterways that connect to our Great Lake are one of the greatest assets for the city. It’s one of the reasons that Blendini City was founded where it was. Access to clean water is paramount and it’s something to be treated with great respect across generations.

Our reservoirs are kept in tip-top shape. We have preserved the ponds and wetlands given to us by Mother Nature.

Our water treatment facilities, connected to our reservoirs, along with our network of well-maintained pipes, ensure clean drinking water. Our many green roofs and natural diversions also keep stormwater from running off too much, and we retain more of that water for our supply. Building our city around stormwater management has kept the water supply steady.

But all of this great water infrastructure would be for naught if it were not for people and buildings that put care into keeping these resources clean.

Taking care of the water and understanding the communal benefits of clean water is taught very early in schools. Water-testing walkups are common in all neighborhoods, so people can know exactly what they are drinking. Composting is also taught as a skill in school.

There is a shared culture of cleaning stormwater pathways. Littering is greatly shamed and fined. The bad actors end up contributing in the end since they are sentenced to intensive community service and fines. Businesses that act in bad faith are severely fined and may have their business licenses revoked.

Enforcing the laws that are written in the books is important. It is not the quantity of laws on the books that matters, but whether or not they are enforced. Rather than having thousands of unfollowed and unknown laws that are selectively enforced, Blendonian society keeps the quantity low and the quality high, so to speak. People and buildings are aware of and taught the laws, so it’s difficult to plead ignorance when breaking them and facing the consequences.

There are intrinsic motivations to keep our water clean and I am glad that clean water (and air) are the two biggest things we all can agree on. It’s not a political thing in Blendini City (thank God). Our neighborhood districts, politicians, and community leaders may have their differences, but at the very core, we are all united in taking care of each other’s health and happiness. That helps me sleep at night!
